Here is something that struck close to home that needed to be covered in this Las Vegas vlog. If you have been a subscriber of mine for some time you know that I have done several videos on Uber trying to get into Nevada. Uber was allowed in Nevada in late Fall 2014, but was banned just a few weeks after. It was too bad that Uber was banned and that there were drivers being given citations for picking people up at McCarran International Airport.
Since I was in Orange County for VidCon I decided that I would ride with Uber for the first time. I had seen Uber cars all over the Anaheim Convention Center during VidCon. I had also seen taxis as well, but it was obvious that Uber was the preferred choice of transportation for most people at VidCon.
The driver in the video, Jon, was nice enough to do an interview on the spot about his experiences so far as an Uber driver. He has been driving for Uber for about a year, and it is his full-time income. He has no other job and is able to support himself living in Los Angeles, CA. If you are an Uber partner then you are an independent contractor. You have to file a 1099. For some people, not having an official employer may be uncomfortable, but as a contractor you have a lot more freedom. Jon is able to deduct gas, car washes, oil changes, etc because he uses the car for work. He also has the complete freedom over his time to work whatever number of hours he feels like working on any day of the week. There are some days where he may choose to work 10-12 hours and other days he may only work one hour. He has the freedom to choose his own schedule.
One of the best parts about Uber, aside from the freedom of time, is the ability to make money quickly. Jon states that it is a great way to make fast money, even on a part-time basis. He also has the option to be able to keep driving if he were to choose to get a full-time job with an employer.
Even if you do not have your own personal car to drive for Uber, you can rent a car. Jon rents the car he drives from a guy on Craigslist. The guy Jon rents his car from has 6 or 7 cars he rents to Uber drivers and the guy is an Uber driver himself. It's because of Uber and technology advancing that this person is able to create a business simply renting out Uber cars to people who want to make money. Even with renting the car every week Jon still makes enough money to financially support himself. I'm so glad I was able to do this interview and hear first hand from an Uber driver and how beneficial it can be in improving the lives of people all over the world who want to make income while also having freedom over their time. I can't wait for Uber to get in Las Vegas, Nevada!
