I have had numerous people ask me about doing a video to compare what it is like to be driving for Uber compared to driving for Lyft in Las Vegas. They are different companies, but both are in the ridesharing industry. Uber is definitely the dominant force in the industry. They have been in operation since around 2009 and are an international company, while Lyft is only available in the U.S. at the moment. Uber does have more drivers and passengers than Lyft. Whenever I look on the apps on my phone I always see more Uber drivers on the road than Lyft drivers.
Due to the size difference in market share the companies do have some differences in their operations when it comes to drivers. Uber takes 25% of the total cost of a trip. Lyft takes 20% of the cost of the trip. Uber is very hands off when it comes to tipping. With Lyft there is the option on the app for the customer to tip the driver if they wish. This helps a lot because it at least puts the idea in the mind of the customer that they can tip the driver. Lyft does not take a cut out of your tips. Lyft also has driver bonuses if you drive a certain number of hours in a week and during certain time frames. Uber currently has no such incentives in Las Vegas.
These differences in approach help balance out the money making potential. With Uber you probably will get more rides, but they do take a bigger cut, do not help with tipping and there are no bonuses for drivers. With Lyft you will likely get less rides, but you have higher potential for tips, you keep all of your tips, and you can earn driver bonuses. You can make money with either one, and I will continue to drive for both companies.
