An Old Fashioned, some red lipstick and a black dress…sigh, there’s just something undeniable about a good ol’ classic. The beloved Vegas showgirl may be an endangered species these days (insert tear), but “VEGAS! THE SHOW” preserved those feather-clad beauties and the likes of an era when everything was flashier and dripping with sophistication. What’s that you ask? Can a show filled with gorgeous and talented women a la Rat Pack era really exist in the here and now? Oh yes my friend, it sure can and all we have to say is raise that curtain and let the good times roll. With a little song, a lot of dance and that certain sultry allure that only old timey Vegas could pull off, this is a trip down memory lane and, well, it’s pretty legit. The costumes are fun, funky, sexy and so real. Ok, well maybe not the candy-themed costumes but hell, their Sammy Davis Jr. sure had us pining for an autograph. For a city that was built on pure, raw talent and obviously dolla dolla bills, this show celebrates iconic moments from the city's rich entertainment history through the decades that made the Vegas we know and love today. And we’ll tip our top hats to that.

Today I sat down with a local Las Vegas resident named Brian. He moved to Las Vegas in 1979 from Orange County. He moved to Las Vegas when he had two sons and one daughter, and had his final daughter after he had already moved to Las Vegas.

Brian talks about how Vegas has almost quadrupled in population since he moved here in 1979, but still feels like a small town in many ways. When Brian was raising his children in Vegas he felt that the educational system was good, but he and his wife chose to send his children to Catholic school for grammar school and high school. He does note that all of his neighborhood friends sent their children to public schools, and felt that their children received a good upbringing as well. Brian's two sons decided not to go to college, but go into the professional world. His daughters both went to UNLV on soccer scholarships.

When Brian was raising his children here in Las Vegas in the 1980s there were not as many school choices, after school programs, and recreational activities for children and families. He notes how significantly that has changed for the better since his children have grown up.

Another point that Brian mentions is the fact that Las Vegas is a very multicultural place to live. We do have a large immigrant population, which gives children a lot of exposure to difficult cultures and customs on a regular basis.

At the end of the day Brian says that Las Vegas is a good place to raise a family. The Las Vegas area is a much more family friendly place than most people on the outside realize. If you're going to be raising kids in Las Vegas then you can rest assured that Vegas has plenty to offer.
