These are a handful of things that I did not find out until moving to Las Vegas and I actually began living in Southern Nevada

1. Monsoons- I know it might seem kind of crazy that I would think that a monsoon is a cool thing. However, when you live in a desert that only gets a few inches of rainfall a year, it is nice to get some rain once in a while. I definitely don’t love the rain. I very much prefer the sunshine, but getting a little rain every now and again is refreshing. I don’t just mean that it is a refreshing change from the normal weather, but that at times it makes the air feel fresher after a nice rain.

2. Local Love Discounts- This one is super cool. I had never heard of an area giving discounts to people just for living there. It does make sense though since Las Vegas is a city that is heavily reliant on tourists coming from out of state and out of the country in order to gain revenue. Having locals take part in some of the tourist attractions does help bring in some additional revenue for the hospitality companies. Also, a large part of the labor force in Southern Nevada does work in hospitality. It’s appropriate that they get to enjoy the same entertainment options that the tourists do at a discount since very few locals will pay tourist-level prices for services.

3. Traffic ticket process-This one is amazing compared to what I experienced in California. Nevada system in place for traffic violations seems about a million times more lenient that what I grew up with in California. Nevada has a point system. The more severe the violation, the more points go on your record. You can go to traffic school to have points removed from your record, but you would really only need to go to traffic school if you have several points. If you get a one point violation, then you really don’t need traffic school because your car insurance rates won’t be affected. Also, Nevada rewards people who don’t get moving violations very often. If you have never gotten a ticket in the state of Nevada or haven’t gotten a ticket in a long time, then when you commit a moving violation it may very well get reduced to just being an illegal parking ticket. You simply pay the fine, and it has no impact on your driving record or your insurance premium.

4. Outdoor activities-I do have to admit that when I was getting ready to move to the Vegas area, I just thought that this area was a desert for as far as you could see in every direction. I had no idea that there so many mountains surrounding Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson, NV. There are hiking trails in both Vegas and Henderson, biking trails, places to go camping, rock climbing, skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, horseback riding and other activities. I really encourage people to take part in these activities. I was not a big “outdoor person” when I first moved to Las Vegas, but after hiking several times, I must say that it is a ton of fun to get out in the open, move area, challenge your body and see nature for how beautiful it really is.

5. East coast and Midwest transplants-This was something that I really did not expect. Since Nevada and California border each other, I figured that Las Vegas would be filled with California transplants from big cities like San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Merced, Fresno, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Oceanside, San Diego, etc. There are definitely a lot of former California residents that live in Southern Nevada. However, what I did not expect to see in the Vegas area was so many people from the Midwest and from the East Coast. I had never heard so many Chicago and New York accents in my life until I moved to Las Vegas. It feels like Chicago makes up the majority of the Midwest transplants. However, there are some from Detroit, Michigan as well as Wisconsin and Minnesota. There are people from upstate New York, Long Island, Manhattan, Boston, Massachusetts and New Jersey. I’ve met some people from states farther down the East Coast like South Carolina and Florida, but not many. When you move to Las Vegas you will definitely come into contact with a lot of people from different states all over America.

These are things that you can find pretty much anywhere in Southern Nevada; whether it be in North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite, Boulder City or even Pahrump.
