Who Shot Tupac?

On the night of 7 September 1996, Las Vegas is packed for one of boxing’s biggest events. Mike Tyson is fighting Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Among the celebrities sitting ringside is twenty-five-year-old Tupac Shakur, already one of the biggest rappers in America.

The fight itself barely lasts. Tyson wins in the first round. Within minutes, the crowd begins spilling back into the casino.

Tupac is travelling with Marion “Suge” Knight, the formidable co-founder of Death Row Records. Their group is supposed to continue the night at Club 662, where Tupac is expected to perform.

Instead, an apparently brief confrontation inside the MGM Grand sets another sequence of events in motion.

Roughly two hours later, Tupac is sitting beside Knight in a black BMW near the Las Vegas Strip. The car stops at a red light.

A white Cadillac pulls alongside.

Gunfire erupts.

What follows becomes one of the longest, most controversial and most mythologised murder investigations in modern American history — a case that takes almost exactly thirty years to produce its first murder conviction.

This is the complete timeline.
