Tony Hsieh, Zappos, Downtown Project, Las Vegas revitalization, and the $350 million experiment that tried to engineer happiness in a city.
Tony Hsieh built one of the most admired companies in America. As the CEO of Zappos, he transformed an online shoe retailer into a billion-dollar business famous for its culture, customer service, and philosophy of happiness. When Amazon acquired Zappos for $1.2 billion in 2009, Tony became one of Silicon Valley’s most celebrated entrepreneurs.
But success wasn’t enough.
Instead of stepping away, Tony invested around $350 million of his own money into an ambitious idea: rebuilding downtown Las Vegas into a thriving community of entrepreneurs, artists, and creators. The project was called the Downtown Project, and its goal was radical — prove that happiness, culture, and innovation could be engineered through design and human connection.
For a brief moment, it seemed possible.
New businesses opened. The Downtown Container Park became a symbol of the experiment. Thousands of people moved into the area. Media outlets called Tony Hsieh the visionary trying to reinvent urban life.
Then the cracks began to appear.
Businesses failed. Leadership fractured. The dream of a collision-driven community started unraveling. At the same time, Tony’s personal life was quietly spiraling into addiction, isolation, and increasingly erratic behavior.
In November 2020, Tony Hsieh was pulled from a burning shed in Connecticut after a late-night fire. Nine days later, he died from complications related to smoke inhalation. He was 46 years old.
This documentary explores the rise of Tony Hsieh, the success of Zappos, the bold ambition behind the Downtown Project, and the tragic story of how one of Silicon Valley’s most optimistic billionaires tried to build happiness — and lost himself in the process.
