CBS is in the building, Gary shows up in a tailored shirt with a list in his
hand, and he says four words that Howard will not let go of for the next half
hour: "there'll be two live hits."
Howard has never heard the phrase. Neither has Robin. Neither has Steve
Langford, who has been in the business thirty years. What starts as a question
turns into a full morning of Howard picking apart Gary's TV vocabulary — the
memos that say the show will "be dark," the "hard out" he picked up from Mike
Gange, the whole act of a radio producer talking like a network guy. Gary shuts
it down once, gets dragged back into it after the interview, and by the end
Howard is drafting a list of completely invented terms to have Scott the Page
feed him.
In the middle of all of it, Howard goes live on the CBS Early Show with Harry
Smith and spends four minutes calling Jay Leno a lap dog and a thief — no
curses, no delay problems, and by his own count not nearly enough time.
