Slater's 50/50 on Lake Mead Boulevard got the license after the Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously in September to allow it.
There are rules. The city requires you to buy food with your drinks, even though state law does not. Drinks also need tamper-proof seals.
Two restaurants applied. Eureka! Downtown is working on its approval.
Henderson is drafting its own to-go alcohol ordinance, with a vote expected in the coming months.
A burger and a margarita to go. It sounds small, but it is a real change.
To-go cocktails caught on in a lot of cities in recent years, and many places kept them because customers liked the option.
For Las Vegas locals, this is about convenience. Pick up dinner on the way home, bring it to a friend's house, and skip the bar tab.
For restaurants, it is another way to make money on a takeout order, and takeout is a bigger part of the business than it used to be.
The food requirement is the city's middle ground. It keeps to-go drinks tied to meals instead of turning restaurants into liquor stores.
The sealed containers matter too. Nobody wants this to turn into drinking behind the wheel, and the seals are there to keep that line clear.
Expect more neighborhood restaurants to apply once they see how it goes at Slater's. And Henderson residents will be watching to see what their city decides.
It is a good example of a small local rule that changes an ordinary Friday night.
Would you order a to-go cocktail with your takeout, or does it feel like a bad idea?
