Every time I drive past Treasures, I notice something that I can't unsee.

Facing the freeway is a sculpture inspired by The Rape of Persephone—an ancient myth centered on abduction and the loss of a woman's autonomy. Whether it's intended as classical art, decoration, or simply a reference to Greek mythology, placing that particular image outside a strip club creates an uncomfortable juxtaposition.

Art isn't neutral. The stories we choose to display reflect the values, fantasies, and cultural narratives we're willing to normalize.

Maybe that's why this sculpture has always bothered me. It feels less like an appreciation of mythology and more like an unexamined reminder of how often women's experiences have been romanticized, aestheticized, or treated as secondary to spectacle.

I'm not saying this statue tells us everything about the business behind it. But I do think it's worth asking why this was the story chosen to greet thousands of people driving by every day.
