A barrel surfaced in Lake Mead in May 2022. Inside was a body. A gunshot wound to the skull. Clothes dated to the late 1970s. The lake had dropped 170 feet in a historic drought — and it started giving back what it swallowed decades ago.

Detectives took less than a day to say the word everyone in Las Vegas had been waiting forty years to hear: organized crime. Gus Greenbaum was found with his throat cut in his own Phoenix home in 1958. Johnny Roselli testified before the United States Senate in 1976 — and turned up strangled in a steel drum in a Florida bay less than a year later. Tony Spilotro and his brother Michael vanished in June 1986. Nine days later, both were found buried in an Indiana cornfield, fifteen hundred miles from the Strip they ran.

This is the story of five Las Vegas disappearances the mob believed would stay buried forever — in the lake, in the desert, in farmland nobody had a reason to search. For decades, that bet paid off. Then a drought, a DNA database, and a generation of forensic technology nobody in 1958 could have imagined started proving them wrong.
