Michael Phelps was born in Baltimore on 30 June 1985, the youngest of three children, and grew up in Rodgers Forge. He started swimming at seven, on his back, because he was afraid to put his face in the water. Coached by Bob Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, he made the Sydney Olympics at 15 and finished fifth. On 30 March 2001 he became the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record, at 15 years and 9 months.
He won 6 golds in Athens in 2004. In Beijing in 2008 he swam 8 events, won 8 golds and set 7 world records, one of those golds by a hundredth of a second over Milorad Čavić. That was one more gold than Mark Spitz won in 1972. In London in 2012 he won 4 more golds, went past Larisa Latynina's record for Olympic medals and retired.
He was arrested for drunk driving at 19, in November 2004. In February 2009 came the bong photo, a three-month suspension, and Kellogg's ending his deal. In September 2014 police stopped him at 84 mph with a blood alcohol level of 0.14. He spent four days shut in his town house and 45 days in rehab in Arizona, where he asked his father to come for family week. In Rio in 2016 he won 5 more golds and broke a record that had stood for 2,168 years. He finished with 23 Olympic golds and 28 medals.
This is how a boy who was afraid of the water won more Olympic gold than anyone in history, and nearly didn't make it to his last race.
