???? ABOUT MIAMI BEACH
Miami Beach is a barrier island — none of it was naturally dry land. Developers
began filling in mangrove swamp in the 1910s, and what grew on top became one of
the densest collections of Art Deco architecture in the world.

Most visitors see about six blocks of it: Ocean Drive, the sand, a cocktail.
This walk goes the other way. Lincoln Road's shopping mall gives way to the
civic campus almost nobody visits, then to a memorial that stops the walk cold,
then to a canal dug a century ago to move farm produce, and finally into the
residential grid where people actually live — quiet streets, green bike lanes,
and a dive bar that has watched the island reinvent itself since 1926.
