If you have a felony on your record, then there are going to be some business employers in Las Vegas that will not accept you, but there will also be some that it won’t make much of a difference. A job working with children, elderly adults, and in any of the big hotels or casinos is not very likely to happen. If you want to work in any type of physical labor job-construction, roofing, painting, manual labor-then those jobs are still likely to hire you with a criminal record.
There are still possibilities of working in a service industry job with a felony on your record. I met one person who was a bartender at a bar in Henderson, NV that had a felony. This person had to get a TAM Card and Health Card (Food Handler’s Card), but not a Sheriff’s Card.
Two tips that I will give as advice for going to a job interview if you do have a felony:
1. I do not recommend lying to your potential employer. Be up front and honest about your criminal past from when you were younger.
2. Tell your potential boss or manager what you learned from the mistake you made, what you have done to correct it since then, and what your goals are going forward. You want to show your potential future manager that you have matured since you made that mistake years ago, and that you are actively working to improve your life. Doing this is not only the truth, but it will give you a better chance at earning gainful employment in Southern Nevada.
