A Chicago locksmith named Dennis Nikrasch turned Las Vegas slot machines into an ATM — without ever
touching the jackpot himself. For twenty years he read the machines like locks: first the mechanical
reels of the 1970s, then the sealed EPROM chip that replaced them, reprogramming it inside live casino
machines while a blocker hid the work from the eye in the sky. Nevada authorities called it the biggest
slot-machine theft in Las Vegas history — and the one thing that finally caught him was never the
machine.

Dennis Nikrasch trained as a locksmith, not a gambler. In the 1970s he hit Las Vegas's mechanical slot
machines for roughly $10 million before a 1986 conviction sent him to prison. When he was paroled in
1991, the industry had moved on — physical reels replaced by a sealed EPROM chip, verified by the
Nevada Gaming Control Board and protected by tamper-evident tape. Nikrasch bought a real machine,
brought it home, and taught himself to reprogram the chip in place — leaving the seal untouched and the
checksum clean — until he could make any machine pay a jackpot on command.

Back on the casino floor in 1996, he built a specialized crew: a man to open the cabinet with a key, a
blocker to screen the work from the surveillance cameras, and a rotating pool of players — some flown in
from the Phoenix area — who collected the jackpots days later on machines they'd never opened. Between
September 1996 and November 1997 the crew hit six major Las Vegas casinos ten times, including a $3.7
million Wheel of Fortune jackpot, while Nikrasch set his sights on a $17 million Megabucks score and a
move to France. In 1998 an accomplice went to the FBI, and Nikrasch was arrested alongside Eugene
Bulgarino, Joan Bulgarino, and Ronnie Gale McElveen. He pleaded guilty, was sentenced to seven and a
half years, and died in 2010. The final tally: around $16 million across two decades — the biggest
slot-machine theft in Las Vegas history.
