Colombia gets plenty of shine as the leading exporter of Latin pop, but it shares an eastern border with another heavyweight. In the last decade, Venezuela has produced an array of artists - multi-hyphenate star Danny Ocean, hermano duo Mau y Ricky, and influencer/singer Lele Pons to name a few - who have made major imprints on the Latin pop zeitgeist. Carmen DeLeon is determined to join those ranks. Splashing around in various dembow-based sounds, her dusky voice is ultra pliable. Need some reggaeton feels? Try this year’s “Mala Memoria,” produced by her frequent collaborator Andres Torres, one of the producers behind the ultimate Latin pop crossover of the 2010s, “Despacito.” How about some bright beats with acoustic guitar? Turn up the Tainy-produced “Volverás.” A simmering ballad? There’s “Bésame Bonito." DeLeon says she owes her versatility and experimentation to a childhood in which she lived not only in Caracas, but Miami and Barcelona, too. Now based in South Beach, the 21-year-old is crafting herself as a bilingual pop threat. These DSCVR performances of “Bésame Bonito” and “Wonderful” are irresistible. The latter track is her first single to be sung in English, but both will knock you off your feet regardless what language you speak.
